LOWELL | It took Lowell a quarter and a half to get on track Tuesday night against visiting Wheeler.
Once The Times No. 6 Red Devils (16-3) found its rhythm, they were able to exert their will against the outmanned Bearcats to post a 68-39 victory on senior night.
“Senior night is good for the girls, but, for a coach, it’s not,” coach Matt Welsh said. “I’ve never seen a team get out to a good start on senior night. It’s not an excuse.”
Lowell was able to push its four-point halftime edge to a double-digit lead as Katie Bobos and Mackenzie Kreutz worked a good two-man game and combined for 18 points in the third quarter alone.
“We ran a lot of pick and rolls,” Bobos said. “It works every time.”
Lowell blew the game open in the third quarter and led 45-28 with eight minutes left and never let its foot off the gas.
“Luckily, our defense is always strong,” Welsh said. “Our defense applies the pressure and gives it to our offense. The is a microcosm of our past five or six games.
“I thought we came out in the third quarter and put a nice 20-4 run on them.”
Lowell trailed 12-9 at the first stop before rallying in the second quarter. The Red Devils closed the quarter with a 12-4 run to take a 23-19 halftime lead.
Hunter Jusevitch sank 5-of-6 free throws and Mackenzie Kreutz hit two baskets inside during the run.
Bobos finished with team highs of 20 points and six steals, while Kreutz finished with 18 points and seven rebounds.
“We picked up our defense, and then our offense picked up,” Bobs said.
Nicole Finch led Wheeler (8-11) with 17 points.
