CHESTERTON | The Portage career scoring record will have to wait at least one more game for Nicki Monahan, but the Indians' senior is more than willing to share the spotlight.
Monahan scored 16 points Friday, part of a balanced attack that featured 18 from Kaitlin Doud and 16 from Alexis Johnson. The Indians (12-6, 7-4) needed every bit of it to outlast hot-shooting Chesterton, 63-58, in Duneland Athletic Conference play.
"Every game, our goal is to get three players in double figures," Portage coach Chris Seibert said. "Honestly, Nicki's one of the most humble, hardest workers I've ever been around. She just wants to keep winning. That's the biggest reward for her."
According to Times records, Monahan's 16 points leaves her 12 short of the school record of 1,075, held by Stacy Sheriff, though she estimated the family's count at 'between 15 and 20.'
"We kept track of it a little bit starting last year. I wanted to break my dad (Grant)'s and uncle Mike's (totals)," Monahan said. "It a fun time. I definitely want to break it. I'm looking forward to accomplishing my goal, but I'm just playing it game by game and whatever happens, happens."
Chesterton (4-12, 2-9) shot a sizzling 10 of 19 from the arc with Kassidy Scott scoring 17, including a 40-footer at the halftime buzzer.
"When we shoot halfway decent, we can be pretty good," Trojans coach Jack Campbell said. "We didn't do anything special (on Monahan) other than try to guard her. They've got too many other kids who can score."
