HOBART | Nicki Monahan doesn't really say too much on the court.

All she does is attack a defense and make baskets.

The Portage senior went 9-of-11 from the field on her way to a game-high 21 points in her team's 51-42 win over Times No. 10 Hobart on Tuesday night.

"Nicki didn't settle tonight, and she made some high-percentage shots," Portage coach Chris Seibert said.

The story of the first half for the Brickies (5-2) was turnovers and missed 3-pointers, as they went 1-of-11 from long distance and committed nine turnovers. The only three made was by Morgan Flaharty, who had just two shots from the field in the first half, making them both.

It was different for the star on the other side, as Monahan was on fire for the entire first half. She went 5-of-6 from the field, including nine points in the second quarter.

The third quarter was more of the same for the Indians (4-1), as Monahan added nine more. Sophomore forward Kaitlin Doud helped pad the lead by adding seven of her own.

"Sometimes it will just be Nicki out there doing the scoring, so we gotta get balanced," Seibert said. "The more balance we have, the harder it will be to guard us."

After being held scoreless in the second quarter, Flaharty scored 10 of her team-high 15 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough, as Monahan and company kept coming.

"We wanted to limit them inside. We did a good job of rotating and communicating, and tonight's win speaks volumes about our kids being able to come back from the loss to Merrillville," said Seibert.
