KOUTS | Morgan Township coach Kevin Krieger has wanted more consistent play from his post players this season.
He got it Wednesday in the first round of the Class A Kouts Sectional. Senior forward Hannah Murphy had 12 points and freshman forward Kameron Stanko added nine in the Cherokees' 62-9 rout of 21st Century.
Morgan's four post players combined for 27 points and 20 rebounds in the lopsided victory.
"They've shown it in spots this season," Krieger said. "They just haven't been as consistent as we would like. Murphy is a veteran. Stanko and (Kia) Holder are freshmen. There's been a learning curve with them. They did a much better job than we did in our (70-38) loss to South Central last week. It was the thing we improved on the most."
Morgan Township faces Kouts, a 52-27 winner over Westville, in Friday's semifinals.
The two-time defending champion Cherokees (13-6) also received solid performances from the senior guard tandem of Trina Coleman and Brianna Leuck. Leuck had a game-high 14 points, draining four 3-pointers, while Coleman added 11 points.
Morgan Township clamped down on defense, creating 15 first-period turnovers with its full-court press. The Cherokees jumped out to a 23-0 lead against 21st Century (4-13) before Rajana'e Davis hit a close-in shot with 6:20 left before the break.
"I just wanted us to come out and play as a team," said Krieger, whose team came in 1-3 over the last four games. "We wanted to do the things we emphasized in practice every day.
"Our team play on offense was outstanding. I thought they shared the ball well. We also did a good job pressing early. We did a good job in the paint, cutting off their penetration."
In the second game, the host Fillies rode the 3-point shooting of Bella Wireman to advance. Wireman keyed a 13-0 first-quarter run with a pair of 3-pointers. She finished with a game-high 17 points, draining five total 3s.
"She started off the season really cold. As the season wore on she's warmed up," Kouts coach Ron Kobza said. "She helped us tonight by getting hot."
Jayla Crump added 10 points for Kouts (13-8).
Freshman Mary Parkman led Westville (0-18) with eight points.
