VALPARAISO | Paige Aguilera can fill up a stat sheet.
The senior forward scored 18 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and pilfered four steals in Boone Grove's 51-32 win over Bowman on Thursday.
"Last year's performance against Bowman, we did good but we fell a little short (in a 58-44 loss)," Aguilera said. "I wanted to take that role and help the team and lead them to a victory."
The Wolves (3-3) opened with a 9-0 run but Bowman quickly put itself back in the game with a couple of buckets. Boone had little trouble with the Eagles' press and by the break held a 28-14 lead.
"Our defense kept us together," Boone Grove coach Candy Wilson said. "We just did a nice job defensively."
Boone finished the game with 10 steals.
The Eagles' (0-3) aggression in the first half put Boone Grove in the bonus early in the second quarter. Fouls and turnovers were the difference.
Due to what Bowman coach Janora Holmes called "in-house issues," some Eagles didn't see the court, including sophomore star Joshlynn King.
"There were a lot of inconsitencies in rotations tonight," Holmes said. "We're working with a young team. The outcome is what it is."
Holmes didn't want to elaborate on the reasons her team was short-handed, other than to say that she was "trying to groom character."
The third quarter began with a 16-3 Wolves run.
"We had so many shots under the basket that we just missed (in the first half)," Wilson said. "We did a much much better job of getting the ball in the basket (in the third quarter)."
Wilson emphasised rebounding in practice this week, Aguilera said. Wilson put an extra player back in transition to contain drives and deny the Eagles second chances.
The Wolves outrebounded Bowman 35-13.
"We've been working on boxing out a lot. A lot," Wilson said. "The girls did a nice job of executing."
