Last year: 10-12
The Knights return three starters for a solid nucleus to build around, but they’ll have to do it without last year’s leading scorer Rachel Schurman, who‘s out indefinitely with an injury. The Knights return two outstanding all-around players in Calli Beezhold and Jennifer Heerema, to give them a solid inside-outside game. One of the Knights' biggest strengths is their height up and down the lineup, especially for a Class A team. “Hopefully, that’s something we can take advantage of throughout the season,” coach Doug Robertson said. “We just have to mesh the group together and see what happens.” Covenant relies on several multi-sport athletes, and they’re working on getting the feel for basketball in the early going. Robertson believes that will work in their favor. “Hopefully, by sectional time we’ll be peaking,” he said. “Game 1 doesn’t matter. It’s Game 23 that matters most. Hopefully, we’re playing our best basketball by then." — Christopher Breach
Last season finish
Lost in Class A Morgan Township Sectional opener to LaCrosse
Leading returning scorer
Jennifer Heerema, 8.3 ppg.
Leading returning rebounder
Calli Beezhold, 10.3 rpg.
Calli Beezhold, Sr., C: Beezhold had three triple-doubles a year ago and will look to be a dominant force once again. She led the team in blocked shots and rebounding, and was third in scoring.
Newcomer to watch
Megan Buiter, So., PG: Buiter started 15 games last year, but will be counted on more this season in Schurman‘s absence. “She can post up a little bit, can handle the ball and hit the 15-foot jump shot or take the ball to the basket,” Robertson said. “She’s young, but she’s becoming a complete basketball player.”
