Last year: 13-9, 8-6 DAC
The Slicers return all five starters from last season’s squad and also bring in two players who will be starters this year. “We’re pretty excited about our team,” coach Skeeter Heath said. “We have a chance to be pretty darn good.” Senior Jaclyn Heath, who averaged 11.7 points and 7.0 assists per game last year, leads the returners for LaPorte. Heath and Taylor Thompson are four-year starters for the Slicers, while Delanie Alcorn and Kelsey Gushrowski are three-year starters. Sophomore Kyleigh Kubik played in LaPorte’s first two games last year before missing the rest of the season with an injury. Nicole Konieczny is slotted to see a lot of playing time at the guard position in her freshman season. Heath said this team would have both depth and the flexibility to do different things defensively. “We can press now,” he said. “We have the depth to handle fatigue and foul trouble. We will play more man-to-man and a lot less zone.” LaPorte’s offensive prowess — four returners averaged at least 8.4 points last year — has Heath excited. “It’s by far the best offensive team we’ve had since I have been coaching girls here,” he said. “If we defend and rebound, we’ll be pretty good.” — Andrew Stem
