Morton Governors
Last season: 7-14, 4-2 in conference, lost in 4A sectional opener to West Side.
Inside the Governors
Leading returning scorer: TeTe Johnson, 7 ppg; Esraa Elabed, 7 ppg
Leading returning rebounder: TeTe Johnson, 7.1 rpg
Star power: Keonna Baldwin, Sr., F/C: "She's an emotional player, really gets into it, and gives great effort all the time," coach Tom Haluska said. "When she's on, she's pretty good."
Newcomer to watch: Alexis Casas, Jr., G/F: "She loves basketball, works at it, and here ball-handling skills have improved tremendously," Haluska said. "We look to her for leadership and keeping everybody together."
Governors' post play a definite strength
Morton graduated only one senior from last year's team and returns six players who started at one time or another. "We had four girls who played AAU ball last summer — Tatyana Skinner, Alexis Casas, Keonna Baldwin and TeTe Johnson — and it really helped make them more physical and able to take contact," Haluska said. "Their confidence level is a lot higher." Maybe so, but the Governors need to average more than 36.5 ppg to avoid their fifth consecutive losing season and claim their first sectional win since 2009. Their overall skill level has improved, but they can't afford 18-20 turnovers a game like last season. !~ Al Hamnik
