Last year: 9-12, 5-5 (GSSC)
The Spartans might be a year away from being a great team, but they still have an opportunity to make some strides this season. Bob Gonczy, in the third year of his second stint at the helm, likes the skills of his young squad. “I’m going to start two juniors and two sophomores,” he said. “My next two players are freshmen, and they’re not bad.” Two-year starter Alisha Watts will slide over from a shooting guard spot to take the point, while post players Kylie Duhamell and Morgan Kutsch provide strength on the inside. Lone senior Gabby Jackson will help provide some experience in the backcourt, while Jena Leach will back up Kutsch in the post. “I’m pretty optimistic that we’re going to have a winning record,” Gonczy said. The Spartans have 27 players in the program and will play a freshman slate, so the future looks bright. “We have a lot of competition for every spot,” Gonczy said. — Christopher Breach
