Last year: 17-4, (2-0 NWC)
The Cougars are short, but loaded with talent. Freshman Dana Evans is one of the top ninth graders in the state, and has already received scholarship offers from Michigan State and Purdue. Senior DeJah Joshua has received offers from Houston, Indiana State and UIC. If this team can rebound they will be very tough to beat. An upgraded schedule has West Side playing Lake Central for the first time ever in the regular season, plus a Region Roundball Rumble matchup with Logansport will be another good one. "United we stand, divided we fall," coach Rod Fisher said. "If our guards can get that into their heads, we can get to Terre Haute." Expect a more wide-open offense this winter. The scoreboard could be smoking whenever these girls take the floor. — Steve Hanlon
Last season finish
Lost in Class 4A Munster Sectional to Lake Central.
Leading returning scorer
Amari Ferguson, 10 ppg.
Leading returning rebounder
Tinon Hunter, 5 rpg.
DeJah Joshua, Sr., G: Fisher said no one in his 37 years as coach has worked as hard as Joshua to improve so much in one year. The result has been three D-I offers. Her perimeter shooting has improved the most from being a gym rat. Can now knock down the 3 with the best of them.
Newcomer to watch
Dana Evans, Fr., G: She averaged 40 points per game as an eighth grader last season. (That is not a typo, it was 40.) Her defense is her offense. Picking a ball is a layup. But she can also shoot lights out. Buy a ticket and watch this kid play. You won't want a refund.
