MERRILLVILLE | Tony Scheub looked hungry Thursday night, like he needed a couple hours at a buffet.
His Andrean 59ers served up a perfect plate at home on senior night, upsetting Times No. 5 Bishop Noll 33-32 to win the unofficial Gary Diocesan championship.
“We were starved for a win,” Scheub said as a loud and crazy student section celebrated on the floor. “Beating them was nice but we needed a win against anybody.”
The 59ers (6-14) showed a blueprint of how to beat the Warriors (17-3), who hadn't lost a game since Dec. 4. Noll will not play another game until the Class 2A sectionals begin next week.
Andrean would not let Noll's premier guards – Asya Hobbs, Brenda Pennington or Naomi House – into the paint or near the basket.
Great man-to-man defense and even greater help-side defense forced the Warriors to shoot from long range. They were cold on a night below zero outside.
“From the field, from the free throw line, we struggled,” Noll coach Vanita Gray said. “Their height hurt us.”
With 6-foot freshman Brittany Anderson out with a concussion for Noll, Andrean's Lauren Stazinski and Haley Hrosek did game-winning damage inside.
Stazinski had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Hrosek scored nine with six rebounds. Brenna Boyle only scored three but she added 10 rebounds.
“This is my senior night so this is the last time I get to play them,” Stazinski said with a big smile. “So beating them meant a lot. Their guards are quality.”
Noll was 8-of-19 from the free throw line. Hobbs went 2-for-7 from the line in the fourth quarter.
Pennington was the only Warrior in double-digit scoring with 11.
“How we bounce back from this will define who we are,” Gary said. “Are we tough enough to face adversity and overcome?”
The win was Andrean's second in its last 12 games.
