(Records through Wednesday. Last week's rankings in parentheses; NR = previously unranked.)
1. Lake Central (1) 13-1
The Indians, like most of the region, have been idle since a Saturday win over Morton. What seemed like six days to prepare for No. 2 LaPorte has shrunk considerably.
2. LaPorte (2) 12-0
The Slicers are in the same position as Lake Central. Mother Nature has not been a friend to the No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown for the tops of the Duneland Athletic Conference.
3. West Side (3) 7-2
West Side played the fewest games of anyone in the Top 10, notching eight court dates in 2013. For the final five weeks of the 2014 regular season, they'll work in the final 12, aka The Ringer.
4. Merrillville (4) 8-4
Another team hampered by weather waiting, the Pirates will have sat for two weeks before playing Chesterton tonight. They'll show if they've shaken off the cobwebs, or if that was too long.
5. Bishop Noll (5) 10-2
The Warriors had a big game of the week postponed for another week. So their big game of the week against fellow Greater South Shore Conference leader Hanover Central is Tuesday. Can you feel the new anticipation?
6. Morgan Township (6) 8-3
The Cherokees have spent 22 days waiting to play. Get this: their last game was Dec. 19, before winter break, before Mother Nature's deep freeze. Think they're anxious?
7. Crown Point (7) 8-5
C.P. is hoping to break it's win-again, lose-again roller coaster against Michigan City tonight. It could be the first win against the Wolves in four chances.
8. Hobart (8) 9-3
The Brickies hope to put their loss to Whiting in the far, far past. But with what could be a key Northwest Crossroads Conference game tonight against Highland, the past could catch up.
9. Highland (9) 8-5
These Trojans love playing conference upset queens. A win here, a win there and suddenly they're in position to upset perennial power Hobart.
10. Kankakee Valley (NR) 7-5
The Kougars used overtime to topple previously one-loss Rochester in the Winter Classic. All those losses behind them, K.V. is showing that it can hit its projected success.
On the bubble: Washington Township (9-2), Kouts (7-3), Lowell (7-5) Portage (6-7), Griffith (7-6), Whiting (8-4), Chesterton (6-6).
