Chris Tomcsi has touched a well-earned sectional trophy each of the past four seasons as an assistant coach.
Now apparently Washington Township wants to see if he can keep his championship streak alive as its new head coach.
Tomcsi is expected to be named the Senators' head coach at the next school board meeting June 10, according to multiple sources close to the girls basketball team.
Tomcsi, a 1998 Griffith grad, has spent the past seven seasons as an assistant for Munster and then Griffith.
He’s taught math at Munster for nearly eight years. He was an assistant for the Mustangs for four seasons, winning a sectional with head coach Matt Backs in 2010.
For the past three seasons, Tomcsi was on the staff of Griffith coach Tom Golumbeck. The Panthers won sectional titles in each of those three seasons. Griffith has five consecutive sectional championships, tied for the seventh-longest active streak in the state.
Washington Township hasn’t won a sectional since going back-to-back in 2002 and 2003.
Tomcsi told remaining Griffith players of his imminent departure earlier this week, a parent of one of the players said.
"It's going to be a big loss for us," Golumbeck said. "He's a good guy."
Tomcsi is the second member of Golumbeck’s staff to leave the team this offseason. Jack Gabor left to join Joe Otis on the Valparaiso staff.
Tomcsi would replace Becky Harper, who resigned April 8 after going 17-45 in three seasons.
