CHESTERTON | West Side’s girls basketball program has a bright future.
In the final tune-up before sectionals, the Times No. 3 Cougars (15-3) ran away from Chesterton (10-10) in a 75-53 win.
Next season, all but three players on the current roster will be eligible to return for West Side.
Freshman guard Dana Evans led the charge for the Cougars, scoring 27 points in just two and a half quarters. Deja Joshua added 10 points.
In the loss, Caroline Puntillo capped her career with a senior night double-double of 38 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs. She was the only Trojan with more than four points.
West Side’s lead reached double digits late in the first quarter and hit the 20-point mark midway through the second period. Tinon Hunter’s offensive rebound and putback made it a 30-point advantage with 5:30 to go in the third. The lead reached 40 points, 72-32, on Hunter’s layup early in the fourth quarter.
Chesterton battled back in the fourth quarter, when Puntillo scored 19 points.
“We did what we needed to do,” West Side coach Rodney Fisher said. “We got out and ran, caused some turnovers. I was pretty pleased about that.”
