Harvey on point in leadership role
CROWN POINT | Alyssa Harvey's small frame and innocent face are dead giveaways that Crown Point's No. 1 is a freshman. Watch her with a club in her hands, however, and her collected course conduct would fool anyone.
Harvey proved she was ready to lead the reborn Bulldogs on Friday, finishing second behind Harley Dubsky, who shot one-under 71, with an 80 at the Crown Point Invitational. Crown Point (366) used Harvey's solid round to take second place against Valparaiso's low total of 337, while Lake Central (371) nabbed third.
"She doesn't act like a freshman," Bulldogs coach Jon Haas said. "She has shown a ton of maturity and has a ton of ability. She knows she is going to have to carry this team, but she knows she still has a lot of work to do as well."
Harvey and Hass, who is in his first year as head coach, are working together to guide a reorganized program.
"Coach Hass has been great at keeping me focused," Harvey said. "You need to focus on your game, because you can't really change what everybody else does. You have to play the course, not the competition."
It just so happens that Harvey's competition was Dubsky, who is making her second run at the state title.
"I've been following her for years, but this was the first time we met," Harvey said. "It was really fun playing with her."
For the third consecutive tournament in as many days, Dubsky pinned top honors behind two powerful eagle displays. The team's 337 was the best score in coach Bill Miller's five-years.
"Our team has never done 18 holes four days in a row, so it gets hard with it being so hot," Dubsky said. "All the girls are starting to get comfortable with the team. We fought it out and now everybody gets to go home and sleep in on Saturday."
