Though Highland High School's girls golf program has only been in existence since 2005, Brianne Torrenga recently did her part in rewriting the Trojans' young record book.

Torrenga's 18-hole round of 83 at Lost Marsh during Friday's Bishop Noll Sectional was the lowest 18-hole score ever carded by a Highland girls golfer.

Torrenga was unaware of her record, but the solid round came as a result of tireless dedication to improving her game. In 2009 at the sectional, Torrenga carded a 98 in cold, windy conditions and shot a 99 in the same meet as a sophomore when Highland advanced to the regional as a team.

"I always play with my mom (Kay), and she'll teach me new ways to chip that I don't know," Torrenga said. "I had a putting lesson recently with (professional golfer) Manny Zerman at Briar Ridge."

In addition to the putting lesson, Torrenga also receives regular lessons from Ernie Sanborn, the golf pro at Briar Ridge.

"He helps me a lot with my chipping and basically my whole swing," Torrenga said.

Torrenga's average drive is only 200 yards, so she has relied on a stellar short game for this final, breakout golf season -- something that helped out tremendously at Lost Marsh.

"I don't hit as far as other people do, so if it's a long par 4, I have to rely on my chipping to get me close to the hole so I can putt for a par," she said.

First-year coach Tom Brankin has recognized Torrenga's vast improvement throughout the year, admitting that having her on the team has made the transition to coaching an easy one.

"She really focused on getting better every day, looking to play her best golf at conference and sectionals," Brankin said. "She's got a great attitude. I wasn't here before, but her attitude is just unbelievable as far as wanting to get better. She's extremely coachable and always open to suggestions on how to approach different shots."

Torrenga will face much tougher competition at the LaPorte Regional at Beechwood Golf Course than she did at Lost Marsh. Since Torrenga is making the trip to Beechwood for the third consecutive season, her familiarity with the course has grown tremendously. Torrenga's disappointing score of 104 last season left her determined for better results.

"I'm ready for it this year," Torrenga said. "I really want to go to state and get on the wall of fame. I want to be happy with my score and know at the end of the day, I couldn't have done any better."
