Marian girls finish sixth at Class AA state golf meet
Marian Catholic's Sylvie Brick finished in a four-way tie for seventh to lead the Spartans' girls golf team to a sixth-place finish at the Class AA state meet at Hickory Point Golf Club in Forsyth.
Brick shot a 79 Saturday to duplicate her 79 in the first round for a two-day total of 158. Marian, which was second last year, finished with a team total of 685. Prospect won the state title with 643, followed by New Trier (650) and Highland Park (661).
Prospect's Allison Walsh was the medalist with a 149.
Brick said she could have played a little better, but was happy to finish seventh. Last year, she was ninth.
"Overall, I am pretty happy to make all-state two years in a row," Brick said. "I didn't play as well as I wanted to do. My putting let me down, but I struck the ball a little better today."
Marian coach Linda Gilley said her team struggled, but didn't let up.
"We wanted to improve on last year's sixth-place (finish), but I am happy because we were in what was a very, very tough field," Gilley said. "We had some ups and downs this weekend, but I am proud because we had to fight to finish to maintain sixth place and they fought."
Marian's Bree Veazey was 23rd, shooting a 163. Homewood-Flossmoor's Katleyn Hoag was 63rd (174).
In Class 1A, Normal U-High won with a 586 and Katherine Hepler was the medalist (148).
In the boys meets in the Bloomington-Normal area, Lake Forest won the Class 3A title with a 612. The Scouts' Joe Willis was medalist with a 144.
Belleville Althoff won the Class 2A title with a 624.
Marion's Jaret Brewer won a one-hole playoff over Marian Central's Luke Waggoner to win the individual title. Both shot 148.
In Class 1A, North Shore was the champion with a 645 and Downs Tri-Valley's Austin Sproles was the state champ. He won a one-hole playoff over Bismarck-Henning's Andy Bott after both shot 150 for the two days.
