BROOK | North Newton’s girls golf team capped off an undefeated season in Greater South Shore Conference play with a victory at the league tournament Friday.
The Times No. 10 Spartans had the tournament’s top-two finishers and outdistanced Hanover Central 387-408 to win the title at Hazelden Country Club.
“(387) is a really good score,” North Newton coach Barbara Peregrine said. “I don’t think we’re the dark horse anymore. I think we’re right there.”
Alisha Watts led the Spartans with a round of 81 to claim medalist honors. She posted a 38 on the back nine to win the title by 11 strokes.
“My swing finally calmed down,” Watts said of the final nine holes. “I had a really solid swing on the back nine and got a few breaks, where I didn’t get many on the front nine.”
Taylor Watkins fired a round of 92 to finish second. The Spartans also got a 106 from Kelsea Russell and a personal-best 108 from Anyssa Long.
Hanover Central’s Haley Frost shot 93 to finish third, and Lindsey Lanham added a round of 99 to finish fifth. The Wildcats were without the services of regular No. 1 player Ashley Yoways because of a college visit.
“We told them on the bus that Lindsey and Haley had to step it up a little, and they did,” Hanover Central coach Jerry Kienzle said. “Haley played really well.”
Jailynn Thomas shot a round of 97 to lead Bishop Noll. The Warriors took third with 477.
Marquette Catholic was fourth with 556.
