CROWN POINT | Penn showed why it's the top-ranked team in the state, posting a 311 in Friday's Crown Point Invitational at Youche Country Club.
Times No. 2 Valparaiso finished second with 332. Harley Dubsky took top honors individually with an even-par 71.
Dubsky beat Penn's Kari Belville in a scorecard playoff. Dubsky's play on 18 may have been the difference.
"I hit a big drive on 18, I think it was 340 (yards)," Dubsky said. "I didn't par the hole, but it's still good for my confidence to be able to hit that long and straight."
Individually, Dubsky and Belville have a history of healthy rilvary.
"We've been playing together forever," Dubsky said. "I love playing against (Belville) and we root each other on. It's good to see each other every now and then."
Valparaiso and Penn meet several times a season. Dubsky said the Vikings appreciate the chance to test their skills against the best.
"It's nice seeing them and it helps our girls see what a No. 1 team is compared to us right now," Dubsky said. "It's a good growing experience and chance to learn by seeing how they do things."
Most golfers felt like the greens played very fast and strokes piled up as the cup got closer.
"I hit some good shots, I've just got to get the short game going a little bit," Dubsky said. "(My short game) is right on the edge of breaking through and shooting really low or fighting it all day."
Jennifer Gough turned in the second best score for the Vikings at 83.
"Just bad putting. It wasn't bad besides that," Gough said. "I wasn't hitting it hard enough, unless I'd put it too far past."
The greens didn't bother Times No. 3 Crown Point's Alyssa Harvey, whose 78 was good enough for third best overall.
"There were some good parts to my game and some bad parts," Harvey said. "I had really good putting and some good chips too, but I wasn't hitting the ball really well."
Crown Point was two strokes behind Valparaiso as a team with 332.
Rounding out the team scoring were Lebanon (360), Times No. 4 Lake Central (374), Hanover Central (403), Times No. 10 Lowell (408), Times No. 7 Portage (411) and North Newton (428).
