Three personal lows fuel commanding win at Curtis Creek
Valparaiso's Ellie Gorski and Brooke Fullenkamp whipped their phones to their ears the minute they stepped off the course, eagerly awaiting each ring so they could boast to their parents.
Both girls clubbed personal low scores of 86, while team leader Harley Dubsky shot her career low with an astounding 66 as Valparaiso (325) handily took the Rensselaer Invite crown at Curtis Creek Country Club over Crown Point (360) and Lake Central (374).
"I had a bogey-free round, which I don't think has ever happened, so that was cool," Dubsky said. "It was nice. I'm just thinking about a couple putts that I missed on the first couple holes for birdie, but those happen."
Part of the reason "those" happened Tuesday could be attributed to the three inches of rain the course soaked in the day before, leaving fairways soggy and bunkers filled with murky pools of water.
"The rain changed the course," Valpo coach Bill Miller said. "These are probably the slowest greens we've played on, and the girls were having a hard time getting to the hole."
Dubsky didn't mind the provisions the rain forced.
"We got lucky today and got to play lift, clean and place everywhere so that definitely helps," Dubsky said. "It was definitely a factor, but it was fun."
To Miller, Dubsky's ability to steer away from bogies was the most impressive part of her day.
"Those are kind of her nemesis," Miller said. "She can throw a lot of birdies out there, but she always seems to find a bogey. If she can stay away from that, she's always going to have chances to birdie because of her length."
