VALPARAISO | An early morning storm left The Course at Aberdeen wet, and several golfers struggled to put up consistent rounds.

Even with the less than optimal golfing conditions Tuesday, it’s no surprise Valparaiso’s Harley Dubsky turned in the best round of any local competitor, firing a 76 to help lead The Times No. 2 Vikings to a second-place finish with 357 strokes at the Viking Invitational.

Penn, the top-ranked team in Indiana, won the invite with a score of 336.

"I felt OK," Dubsky said. "It was kind of a blah day, up and down and just trying to grind it out."

Dubsky’s 4-over par performance was far from her best 18-hole round.

"It was just one of those days where you come out, feel pretty good and hit some good shots,” she said. "It’s one of those crappy days you get stuck with sometimes.

"You just go through it the best you can."

Times No. 4 Lake Central finished third in the 13-team field with 376 strokes. Sophomore and No. 1 golfer Kylie Shoemake carded an 83, which tied for her best 18-hole score in her young prep career.

Shoemake was one golfer who wasn’t hindered by the wet conditions of the course.

"I was really happy and proud of myself," Shoemake said. "My ball-striking was consistent. I just played smart.”

In a field that will include many teams Lake Central will see again throughout the season and could see in the postseason, Shoemake knows facing competition like this will benefit her continued development as a golfer.

"It’s really nice to compete with the other teams because they’re so good,” she said. "We realize how good we are too. It’s good practice (for the postseason).”

No. 3 Crown Point finished at 377 to place fourth. The Bulldogs were led by Tiffany Curtis (83) and Alyssa Harvey (85).

"I was happy with what I did, but I also had four penalty strokes," Curtis said. "We just try to keep the ball in play. That’s all I really want to do now.”

Other local golfers who shot well were Merrillville’s Maggie Connelly (85), Valparaiso’s Jennifer Gough (86) and Chesterton’s Nicole Dutz (88).

Chesterton played without defending state champion Kelly Grassel.
