UNION TWP. | Andrean was 11 seconds away from elimination in the Class A Sectional opener against Marquette when Rylee Horn saved the day.
Horn found the back of the net from 10 yards out to tie the game and send it into overtime and the 59ers prevailed 2-2 after winning the shootout 4-3 in six rounds.
Andrean (8-7) will play Wheeler in Thursday’s semifinals. The Bearcats beat Washington Township 10-1 in the early game.
The 59ers had three good chances in the final few minutes that missed before Horn netted the tying goal.
Marquette (4-12) scored an unconventional goal in each half to take a 2-1 lead.
Madeline Wood scored on a 40-yard free kick the deflected off an Andrean defender to tie the game 1-1 in the 19th minute, and Maggie Mellen made it 2-1 on a half-volley from 25 yards out in the 68th minute that skipped into the net.
The Bearcats (14-1-2), who finished the game with 26 shots on goal, got two goals from Lauren Fraztke and one from Terra Philips to lead 3-0 in the 17th minute.
“We had a good week of practice,” Wheeler coach Bryan Murray said. “We kept our conditioning up. We were as crisp as we’ve been all over the field for the first half.”
Fratzke got her third goal of the night in the 27th minute to make it 5-0, and then she left the game to compete in the Greater South Shore Conference Cross Country Meet, where she finished eighth and earned first-team all conference honors.
“She had her uniform on underneath her soccer uniform,” Murray said. “Fortunately the score let her out 10 minutes earlier than planned.”
Shannon Eden tallied two goals for Wheeler, which led 9-0 at halftime. Emma Heinold, Katie Reif, Alex Praschak and Miann Wilson each had one goal for the Bearcats.
