UNION TWP. | Both teams pitched shutouts Thursday night, so something’s got to give Saturday.
Wheeler and Bishop Noll won by a combined score of 5-0 to advance to the sectional championship, totaling 32 shots and putting 20 on goal.
In the opener, host Wheeler rode a big second half to a 3-0 win over Andrean. Terra Philips led the charge with two goals and an assist for the Bearcats.
Philips opened the scoring from point-blank range off an assist from Lauren Fratzke with just under 19 minutes left in the game.
“We knew we had it, and we just needed to pick up the pace,” Philips said. “We get really pumped after we get our first goal. We know we can do it.”
Less than two minutes later, Philips returned the favor on a corner kick assist to Fratzke.
“We play up top together really well, and we feed off each other really well,” Philips said. “We both have an assist to each other in a lot of our games.”
Philips scored the dagger on an assist by Katie Reif with less than a minute remaining.
“That sealed the deal,” Philips said. “We knew we had it.”
Andrean pressured often late but was unable to put in any of its seven shots on goal. Maddie Mandich made six saves for the 59ers.
In the nightcap, Bishop Noll’s offensive force proved too much for Westville as the Warriors won 2-0.
Noll fired off 23 shots and put 13 on goal, but Westville keeper Emily Rogers made 11 saves in an effort to keep her team close.
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead on an unassisted goal by Julia Kusiak. Megan Whelan added to the lead with an unassisted goal just a minute before halftime.
Whelan earned a penalty kick late in the game after being taken down in the box, but the attempt sailed over the crossbar.
Westville managed just two shots in the match but put both on goal.
Kirsten Markusic made two saves for Bishop Noll.
