DEMOTTE | Times No. 9 Boone Grove advanced to the championship game of the Class A Covenant Christian Sectional with an 8-0 win over Rochester in Thursday’s second semifinal game.
The Wolves (16-2) will play in the 2 p.m. championship game on Saturday against defending champion Argos, who sidelined Rensselaer 5-0 in Thursday’s first match.
The championship will be a rematch of last year’s semifinal game Argos won 4-1.
Boone set the tone early against Rochester (8-9) when leading scorer Paige Aguilera found the back of the net at the 4:12 mark to start a run of five goals in the first 20 minutes. Aguilera scored four goals in the first half, and Mackenzie Starcevich added two goals for a 6-0 lead at the break. Starcevich finished with a hat trick.
Argos (11-5-2) got a hat trick from Raelynn LaFrance to eliminate Rensselaer (4-10-2). Two of LaFrance’s goals came during a three-minute span of the first half where the Dragons scored three times. Jami Patterson scored the third goal of the stretch to put Argos up 3-0 at the 30:29 mark.
Argos tallied two more goals in the second half, including a penalty kick by LaFrance, but Rensselaer fought hard to keep the game from getting out of hand.
“We can be getting beat 11-0, you never give up,” Rensselaer coach Earnest Watson said. “That’s one thing I try to instill in them.”
Argos controlled the play on both ends and finished with nine shots on goal to Rensselaer’s two.
“We play really hard, and we don’t get frustrated,” senior defender Julie Strohmeier said. “We always play together, and we always play as a team. I really enjoy them, and it’s a really good team to be with.”
