HIGHLAND | Forget a soccer pitch.
After Thursday's game against Michigan City, Highland's field looked like a war zone.
With imposing rain coming down all game long, both teams found it extremely difficult to score.
But the Times No. 5 Trojans got two goals from Michelle Geissler and won 3-0.
Slipping and sliding everywhere, the Trojans and Wolves battled to a 0-0 tie in the first half, with Highland having several near missed shots on goal.
Senior Nikki Goodeve had three of them, as two went just three feet wide, and the other just barely sailed over the crossbar.
It was more of the same in the second half for the Trojans, as they had two shots off the crossbar and one shot off the post in a span of three minutes.
"Obviously, I would have liked us to finish better, but the weather dictated the game and made it an even playing field," Highland coach Gordon Walker said.
The home team finally broke through with 29 minutes left when Frankie Angotti passed the ball toward the middle of the field when Geissler put it in with a header past the outstretched arms of Michigan City keeper Betsy Carpenter.
Seven minutes later, Highland (4-3) struck again, but this time off the foot of Tiffany Fordyce, as she shot one over Carpenter on the top left side of the goal.
On Michigan City's closest shot of the night, senior striker Kelsey Pawlowski broke away from the Highland defense and had a wide-open opportunity, but her shot grazed off the post, and keeper Sam Kerber scooped it up.
Geissler was at it again with seven minutes left when she converted on a breakaway goal led by a 45-yard pass from Goodeve for the Trojans' last goal.
"We're still a work in progress, but we're still shooting for October at this point," Walker said.
