FLOSSMOOR | This sectional championship was all about the team effort of Homewood-Flossmoor.
The Vikings played smart soccer down to their last girl Saturday on the way to a 3-1 victory over Sandburg and a 3A Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional championship. Haley Hruska scored two goals for the Vikings. Hruska was able to head in both goals in impressive fashion. Lauren Hurley scored the other goal for the Vikings.
"They were both perfect balls at the perfect height," Hruska said. "The defense was hard but I was able to get around it. Luckily, they just went in. It was intense. We had to come out here and play extra hard."
The Vikings advance to the Benedictine University supersectional where they will face Downers Grove South at 7 p.m Tuesday. It is H-F's second straight trip.
Hruska started the scoring just 5:50 into the match when she was able to get a head on a Kate Vendrely kick. Hruska then added her second header goal of the match late in the first half to give the Vikings a 2-0 halftime lead. Hruska's second goal was assisted by Ali Farkos.
"We knew we could beat them," Hruska said of Sandburg. "We're going to just practice hard and do some more team bonding. Just go ahead and keep moving forward and try to go past what we did last year."
The Eagles came out fast and furious in the second half and were able to quickly cut the Homewood-Flossmoor lead in half just 27 seconds into the half. But the Vikings were able to retake a two goal lead when Hurley scored her goal just over two minutes later.
"We talked about it at half time and I kind of knew it was going to happen," Viking head coach Charlie Ward said of the second half Sandburg push. "If it happens, be prepared for it and don't freak out. It was a team effort today. We're a deep team. It's amazing that we're back in the supersectional."
