MUNSTER | Munster's Jess Wargo says that scoring goals isn't her No. 1 priority when it comes to her own soccer game.
"For me it's about making plays," the senior said. "I always try to go in hustling. That's my game."
She made plays and hustled in Munster's 2-0 win over longtime rival Highland in Northwest Crossroads Conference on Tuesday night.
It didn't go well at first for the winners, as sophomore Jessica Flores hit two off the crossbar in the first 23 minutes, with her second one just a few inches too high.
The Mustangs (11-2, 4-0 NCC) were finally able to strike at 27:01 after capitalizing on a foul in the box by Highland that led to a free kick.
Junior Sammi Koufos changed the field and lofted one to her left and hit a striding Wargo, who headed it in over the reach of Trojan senior goalkeeper Ashley Faucault for the first goal of the contest.
"We treated it like a corner since it was a little bit further away. I raised my hand and called for it and Sammi gave me a perfect ball," said Wargo, who notched her fourth goal of the season.
The first half was controlled by the host Mustangs, as they had seven shots on goal compared to just one for the Trojans (4-7, 2-2), which came all the way in the 37th minute on a misfire from sophomore defender Kelsey Dyer.
After a lot of ball control, Highland got its next shot off in the 50th minute after junior midfielder Brianna Williams was stopped by Munster senior keeper Parin Patel, but the ball bounced off Patel.
Highland had a free shot at it, but junior Alyssa Wojcik cleared it out of the box before the Trojans could capitalize.
Munster sophomore Rachel Tarpo added the team's second goal after sneaking in behind the Trojan defense and re-directing a Cayla Bales pass in for the score.
"We practice everyday on controlling the ball," Munster coach Valerie Pflum said. "In the second half, we played faster with the ball and played one-touch soccer."
