EAST CHICAGO | East Chicago Central's new soccer complex became a shooting range Tuesday, as Munster ripped shot after shot en route to a 4-0 win over Clark in the Class 2A sectional opener.
"We were on target more, instead of a bunch of crazy shots," coach Val Pflum said. "We've been very off-target."
The Mustangs notched 37 shots, 22 of which were on goal, in total. The ball rarely left the Pioneers' side of the pitch.
"The heart is truly there (with my team)," coach Liz Almeda said. "Now, we just need to work with them on some stuff."
Munster (15-3) got it's first goal just under four minutes into the match when Rachel Tarpo pushed a rebound past Clark keeper Racquel Haro. At 7:36, Allysa Wojcik's corner kick found Jackie Ashley's foot and then the nylon to make it 2-0.
Munster peppered Haro with the ball for the next 8 1/2 minutes before scoring again at 16:10 on Jessica Flores's rebound shot inside the box.
The Pioneers (5-10-2) didn't take a shot until almost the 37th minute. Clark never put a shot on goal.
"The girls left it out on the field and for that we're really proud," Almeda said. "They all grew as athletes and soccer players. The effort that we've seen out here is something we couldn't ask for."
The second half opened with Jess Wargo's goal at 41:12 to bring the score to 4-0.
Haro finished with 18 saves.
"Clark played well. They kept up with us," Pflum said. "They never gave up and they played with a lot of heart."
Munster will play Morton Thursday. The winner of that game meets the winner of Thursday's first match between Hammond and East Chicago Central in the sectional final.
