Scouting the 2011 Times All-Area Girls Soccer Team
First Team
Jenna Arnold | Crown Point
Position: Defense
Year: Sophomore
Analysis: A one-woman break stopper, Arnold seemed to always be in the right place at the right time. Her defense was a big reason for the Bulldogs' success, whether it was marking the best scorer or patrolling the back third. She also added a goal and four assists.
Rosie Biehl | Chesterton
Position: Midfielder.
Year: Junior.
Analysis: With 16 goals and 11 assists, she helped a team believed to be in rebuilding mode earn a share of the DAC crown.
Lauren Doreski | Lake Central
Position: Forward.
Year: Junior.
Analysis: Arguably one of the area's best strikers, she's capable of shooting -- and scoring -- from just about anywhere in the front half. She also can break down a defense with the dribble.
Nikki Goodeve | Highland
Position: Midfielder.
Year: Senior.
Analysis: Goodeve (11 goals, 14 assists) capped a strong career at Highland with another season as one of the area's best overall players. She could score, but was equally good at giving her teammates opportunities.
Kate Johnson | Valparaiso
Position: Midfielder.
Year: Senior.
Analysis: Johnson (21 goals, 10 assists) was one of the most dynamic players in the area this season. Coach Robert Cespedes said Johnson was, "A true team player, completely selfless and always positive."
Cindy McInerney | Griffith
Position: Forward.
Year: Junior.
Analysis: A move from sweeper to forward paid off for the Panthers, as McInerney notched 15 goals and five assists. Coach Wally Kudyba gets anther season to see what she can do.
Sarah Rivich | Crown Point
Position: Midfielder.
Year: Junior.
Analysis: Some players scored more goals and were more flashy, but Rivich (18 goals, 16 assists) stuck out as not only the best player in the area but possibly the whole state. Physically gifted, she also has a very high soccer IQ.
Allyson Roller | Munster
Position: Defense.
Year: Senior.
Analysis: An All-District defender, Roller (five goals, 11 assists) was a big key to the late success the Mustangs had after struggling early. It was supposed to be a rebuilding year.
Kelsey Shoemaker | Crown Point
Position: Goalie.
Year: Senior.
Analysis: She racked up the shutouts this season and only gave up three goals to Duneland teams. Shoemaker (10 shutouts) stepped up big in the postseason and almost got C.P. a berth in the state championship.
Andrea Violanti | Valparaiso
Position: Forward.
Year: Junior.
Analysis: Violanti (eight goals, 10 assists) didn't post gaudy numbers, but Cespedes said she was the leading reason for many of the Vikings' scoring opportunities.
Hannah Wilder | Kankakee Valley
Position: Forward.
Year: Sophomore.
Analysis: Wilder (27 goals, nine assists) is the most prolific scorer of K.V.'s dynamic trio of sophomores (Haleigh Wenglarz and Natalie Lotz are the other two). Wilder and the Kougars, have a bright future.
