WHEATFIELD | Calumet Christian might be a small school, but it’s living large in volleyball circles.
Calumet Christian, with an enrollment around 100 students, stormed its way through the Kankakee Valley Invitational on Saturday with a perfect 4-0 mark to capture the title -- its third in succession.
The Patriots won the final match against the host Kougars 25-15, 21-25 and 15-6 to take home the trophy.
“It’s really cool,” said sophomore middle hitter Ally Roh, the only returning starter. “It was hard again like last year. We went the three games too, but we fought back.
“It was good to see us do it again even with eight seniors graduating.”
Most impressive is the Patriots (13-2) have a short bench, but they never wore down on a long day.
“We have nine players and they all play,” Calumet Christian coach Melinda Carr said. “We were serving really well, and our defense is really good. We just try to play smart and make less errors than the other team.”
After a long Saturday of 17 matches among nine teams, the host Kougars also went into the final match with a perfect 3-0 mark.
K.V., North Judson and Calumet Christian won their respective pools in morning action, going 2-0 to advance to the championship pool D.
K.V. outlasted scrappy North Judson 22-25, 25-16 and 15-5, while Calumet Christian disposed of Judson in pool D to set up the winner-take-all final match.
“They need to have more of a desire to win,” K.V. coach Rick Ashmore said.
