CHESTERTON | Playing without injured senior Ali Ostrom, the Chesterton volleyball team put forward an inspired effort Monday night.
The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Times No. 4 Andrean and then withstood a furious rally to knock off the 59ers in five games.
Jessica Urycki led Chesterton with 10 kills in the 25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 15-10 victory.
"We lost a five-set match against Mishawaka last week because I thought we stopped trying to win in the fifth game," Chesterton coach TR Harlan said. "Tonight was what we've been working on since last Thursday."
The Trojans suffered a huge loss last week when Ostrom broke her fibula against Mishawaka. After several days of intense practices and lineup shuffling, Harlan started freshman Brittany Milzarek. The middle hitter came up with two huge blocks in the fifth and deciding game.
"I'm just so proud of Brittany for what she did tonight," Harlan said. "She's 14 and she's making her first start. She's been on varsity for two days. She was nervous, but she came back and made plays."
Chesterton freshman Sammi Ostrom also shined on Monday night, registering nine kills for the Trojans (2-1).
The Trojans looked like they were going to run away with the match, but Andrean didn't fall quietly, jumping out to big leads in the third and fourth games which led to victories. Once the fifth game started, Chesterton looked nothing like the team that had been on the court for the last two games.
"Now we have experience being in this situation on two different occasions and we showed that we can learn from it," Harlan said. "I'm proud of the experienced kids that we had that led the way."
Andrean senior Kellie Wojciechowski led the 59ers (1-1) with 22 kills and 11 assists while Korie McCrea added 10 assists and 33 digs.
