WASHINGTON TWP. | Washington Township had lost in the semifinals of the Porter County Conference girls volleyball tournament for the past two years.

On Saturday, the Senators put an end to the wait, capturing their first tournament title since 2008 with a sweep of Boone Grove, 25-15, 25-16, 25-18.

"We had a very good effort. To finally get that monkey off our back is huge," Washington Twp. coach Scott Campbell said.

The Senators also won the PCC round robin, going undefeated in conference play, and remain undefeated at home this season.

"We win the round robin every year, and then we fall short in the tournament, so to win that (the tournament) is really good," Campbell said.

With an an early 11-6 lead in Game 1, Washington Twp. took a 20-12 lead after two kills from Vickie Flanders, and went on a 5-3 run to win the first game 25-15.

"Vickie Flanders proved why she was MVP of the conference," Campbell said.

Flanders had 16 kills against Boone Grove and two service aces.

The Senators led Game 2, 14-7, before Boone Grove rattled off five straight points to pull within two. Washington Twp. responded by going on a 8-1 run ending with two Emily Holcomb aces.

Game 3 saw the Wolves take a 4-2 lead early after a Morgan Marshall kill, but the Senators came back and went on a 10-2 run to take a 12-6 lead.

"I'm so excited we won, it's been a long time since we've won PCC all together," Flanders said. "I think we did great together as a team, there was no individual person that did great. I thought we all played well as a team."

Boone Grove was led by Nicole Malouhos and Emma Foster, who both had four kills.

Boone Grove defeated Morgan Township in four games in the semifinal, 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19. Malouhos had eight kills to lead the team, and Meghan Bender added seven. Morgan Township was led by Sammy Meschede who had 13 kills, five service aces and one solo block.

Washington Township topped Kouts in the second semifinal game, 25-20, 23-25, 25-12, 25-23. Flanders had 24 kills and two service aces, while Maddy Johnson added four blocks. Brianne Fankhauser had 10 kills for the Fillies, and Sarah Clemens added seven kills and seven service aces.
