LAPORTE | With one thunderous stroke of her right arm, LaPorte senior Kim Trojan set off a party 20 years in the making.
Trojan led the Slicers to their first regional title since 1990 with a 25-19, 25-11, 25-13 victory over Munster on Tuesday night in LaPorte.
The Slicers will play Carroll (31-6) at the Warsaw semistate on Saturday morning. This season marks the first year of a one-game regional and a two-game semistate.
"A regional title is a regional title," Trojan said. "It felt so good to hold that little plaque in the air."
With the Slicers (33-4) up 24-13 in the third game, Trojan told teammate Erica Lang that she wanted the last kill. When the ball went up in the air, Lang served her 37th assist of the match to the lone LaPorte senior and Trojan brought down the house.
"I wanted it, no question," Trojan said. "I told Erica that I was putting that one down. It's a little bittersweet to play my last match at home, but there is nothing better than winning the last match."
The Mustangs came out on fire on Tuesday night, jumping out to a 16-11 lead in the first game before LaPorte coach MaryBeth Lebo called a timeout. The Slicers responded with a 14-3 run to close out the game and effectively the match.
"We were fired up and I told the girls that we were the underdogs and we had nothing to lose," Munster coach Tracy Afman said. "I'm proud of a lot of the things we did. If we had won that first match than we would've come out blazing hot in the second match, but LaPorte keeps coming at you. I think we lost a little confidence after that first game."
Trojan led the Slicers with 15 kills while junior Megan Walls and sophomore Taylor Lebo each had 11 kills. Sophomore Sierra Conklin added six kills off the bench.
"We have a lot of options," MaryBeth Lebo said. "Once we get to Warsaw, we're going to be going against flawless defensive teams and we're going to need to switch things up a little bit."
Heather Boyan led the Mustangs (26-9) with eight kills and three blocks in her final high school match. Boyan will play volleyball next fall at Western Kentucky.
