Times Indiana All-Area volleyball team
First team
Sarah Anderson | Lake Central
Stats: 439 assists, 48 aces, 405-419 serving, 287 digs.
Position: Setter.
Class: Senior.
Analysis: The senior setter made just 14 serving errors all season, showing her prowess in the back row. As the Indians finished third in the Duneland Athletic Conference, Anderson helped distribute the ball to a menagerie of quality hitters. Her control of the offense helped keep Lake Central in top position all season.
Kelsey Bonewits | Griffith
Stats: 411 kills, 33 aces, 303-314 serving, 38 blocks, 68 block assists.
Position: Middle Hitter.
Class: Senior.
Analysis: Bonewits put her name in the record books again this year at Griffith, breaking all of the previous kill and block records (per game, season and career). Defenses worked to slow her down, and with 411 kills she proved she couldn't be stopped. She also made it a goal to teach her skills to those around her, making the sophomores and juniors on her team even better so she leaves a legacy. Bonewits will take her talents to Wayne State University.
Shannon Doyle | Wheeler
Stats: 478 kills, 65 aces, 529 digs, 20 blocks, 10 block assists.
Position: Outside Hitter.
Class: Junior.
Analysis: Making herself a well-rounded volleyball player was important to the junior this fall. She proved her prowess in the back row as well, finishing the season with 529 digs and 65 aces. Her front-row talents can't be denied, as she offensively helped lead the Bearcats to their first regional championship in school history.
Shannon Farrell | Munster
Stats: 192 kills, 54 aces, 176 digs, 39 blocks.
Position: Outside Hitter.
Class: Sophomore.
Analysis: The sophomore's offense helped lead the Mustangs to a strong second half of their season, and that's what people will remember most. Munster won its first regional title since 1996 and Farrell's 17 kills against Valpo were important to that success. Farrell shed the jitters of youth early to prove to be an offensive weapon for versatile Munster.
Vicki Flanders | Washington Twp.
Stats: 401 kills, 50 aces, 215 digs, 10 blocks.
Position: Outside Hitter.
Class: Senior.
Analysis: Driven by her athleticism, Flanders learned the sport and became the best player in the Porter County Conference in just four years. The senior could be counted on as a tough offensive weapon for the PCC's regular-season and tournament champions. That the Senators continued that success to a semistate berth is a testament to Flanders' leadership.
Courtney Kvachkoff | Crown Point
Stats: 203 kills, 40 Aces, 326-365 serving, 339 digs, 17 1/2 blocks
Position: Outside Hitter.
Class: Senior.
Analysis: Kvachkoff's athleticism and heart made her an offensive juggernaut for Duneland Athletic Conference opponents this season. The Bulldogs finished second in one of the toughest conferences in the state and Kvachkoff's 203 kills led her team. She proved to be a skilled all-around player, chipping in 339 digs.
Tarrah Laskey | Valparaiso
Stats: 90 kills, 1,323 assists, 39 aces, 328 digs, 54 block touches
Position: Setter.
Class: Junior.
Analysis: The junior setter had so many options with a talented crew of hitters that her job almost always looked easy. A pick to the Indiana North Junior All-Star team, Laskey also broke school records for assists in a match and in a season. A tough front-row threat, she finished second on her team in blocks.
Taylor Mullen | Andrean
Stats: 393 kills, 231 digs, 33 aces, 18 block solos, 18 block assists
Position: Outside Hitter.
Class: Senior.
Analysis: The senior who led the regional champion 59ers in kills is a tough competitor who fought for every one of those points. She was a tough force on the front line for the Northwest Crossroads Conference champions and became a hard-to-miss all-around player.
Ana Nicksic | Andrean
Stats: 1,009 Assists, 186 digs, 31 blocks, 70 block assists, 68 kills, 33 aces
Position: Setter.
Class: Senior.
Analysis: The Times Player of the Year was like a maestro, controlling an offense with the option of five hitters who each had potent potential up front. Her 6-foot frame made her equally difficult to block. She helped pick up 70 block assists and 31 solos. She's signed her letter of intent to join Division I Elon University next season.
Faith Rohn | Calumet Christian
Stats: 241 kills, 26 assists, 68 aces, 188 digs, 6 blocks, 18 block assists
Position: Outside Hitter.
Class: Senior.
Analysis: The Patriots won their second consecutive National Association of Christian Athletes National Championship, led by the heavy-hitting Rohn. Headed to Palm Beach Atlantic for college, Rohn made even the IHSAA schools take notice of her talent. She leaves Calumet Christian as one of its most prolific scorers.
Anna Sacco | Lowell
Stats: 359 kills, 60 blocks, 65 block assists, 56 digs, 50 aces
Position: Middle Hitter.
Class: Senior.
Analysis: The front row player was no secret by her senior year and kept NCC defenses hopping as a kill machine. She was tough to block and even more difficult to create an offense off of as her blocks usually landed as points.
Kate Workman | Valparaiso
Stats: 53 aces, 743 digs
Position: Libero.
Class: Senior.
Analysis: DAC coaches named the libero the conference's MVP after breaking school records for digs in a match, in a season and in a career (the match record she broke with 42 was her own). She was nominated as an Under Armour All-American and will play for Purdue University next season. Opposing offenses tried to keep the ball away from the speedy, versatile back-row phenom.
