CP's Supan utilizes improved focus as a gymnast
CROWN POINT | Megan Supan readily admitted she didn't take gymnastics as seriously as she needed to the past two seasons.
Now a junior for Crown Point, she has established a greater focus this year, leading to higher scores and an overall increased confidence during competition.
"I wanted to be a leader because we lost our senior (Allie Ban) last year and that was a big part of our team," Supan said. "I wanted to step it up because I knew our team could do a lot this year."
Crown Point coach Ami Pysh has seen firsthand the improved confidence and level of focus Supan possesses now, both in practice and in competition.
"She's got her game face on," Pysh said. "She gets up on beam now and she's not thinking about anything else. She's really doing that on the other events, too. It kind of solidifies that gymnastics is mental. You have to be in the game, otherwise you're not going to improve. She really understands that and has taken well to the leadership role."
With former C.P. gymnast Carly Kiran deciding not to come back for her final season, Supan has had to step up even more. Supan's top score this season is a 34.9, attained on Thursday, so she's still shooting for a 35 overall score. She's also scored new career highs in every event this season, evidence of her improvement.
"In the first or second meet, when she got off the beam I just said ‘Wow, you have your game face on,'" Pysh said. "You can just tell when the kids are focused during beam. She's been scoring high 8's. She should be at the 9.0 mark pretty soon. I'm really proud of her."
Supan excels at the floor event, where she's scored 9.325 this season. Last season, she scored a 9.275 at the Chesterton Sectional, finishing well below the regional qualifying top six gymnasts. The focus this season is obvious.
"My goal is to go to Regionals in the floor, and as a team (overall)," she said. "I think if we all get through our injuries, we can all go to Regionals as a team."
