Valpo edges Portage in battle of two of state's best gymnastics teams
PORTAGE | The Portage Indians won two events and tied in another Thursday night against Valparaiso, but could not pull out a victory. The state-ranked No. 1 Vikings narrowly defeated the No. 3 Indians 111.95-110.875.
Valparaiso won the beam event, 28.125, a full two points above Portage's 26.125. The Vikings and Indians tied in the bar event with a 27.900 score, and the Indians won vault (28.425) and floor (28.425).
Morgan Algozine won the all-around with 38.374 points. Portage's Mackenzie Barcelli (37.4), Danielle Solis (36.575) and Madison Kurtz (36.325) took the next three spots.
Solis also won the floor exercise with a 9.7. The Indians' placed third and fourth in the floor exercise as well. Algozine took second in the floor with a 9.575.
