BOONE GROVE | His initials were on their shoes and thoughts of him were on their minds.
Hebron's girls dedicated Tuesday's Porter County Conference Championship to former Hawks runner P.J. Fox, who is battling cancer.
"We want him to know we ran for him," Jordan Hanaway said after the Hawks rolled in the rain to a PCC repeat. "We all prayed for him before the race and when I was running, all I kept saying was, 'I'm running for P.J.' I know the whole entire team did."
The Hawks made their alum proud, breezing to the title with 35 points. Boone, powered by the 1-3 finish of defending champ Jordan Chester and Ashley Kopla, claimed second.
"Going in, we really set goal times, mile, two-mile, end of race, but we had to throw all that out the window and just get up there as high as we can," Hebron coach Mike DeFries said. "I'm happy with the times in these conditions. Our times have been coming down, unlike last year. I'm happy with where we're at."
Hanaway paced four Hawks in the top eight and six in the top 15.
"We don't really have a top person," Hanaway said. "Somebody could beat me and that would push me the next race. We're really close together. I think the team's packing really good."
Chester won by 55 seconds over Kouts' Courtney Bennett in 19:30.82.
"Once I got around the mile mark, I was by myself and I was just trying to push for my best time," Chester said. "(Ashley and I) just really work well together. It's really nice to have somebody there for you each and every time.
Kopla was third at 20:46.
"I was hoping for second," she said. "I was trying to get ahead of (Bennett) and stay ahead of her."
Bennett's finish was up a spot from last season.
"It's where I was hoping to be," Bennett said. "Running in the rain and cold is my favorite way to run. It actually helps me run better. It's really tough to run against (Chester) every race. I jus try to pace myself along with her and get closer and closer each race."
