Adam Hutchison's 25-yard field goal on second down kept Times No. 1 Marian Catholic undefeated with a 20-17 overtime win over Class 7A No.8 Carmel in East Suburban Catholic Conference action in Mundelein on Friday.
The Spartans (5-0, 3-0) got the ball back when Wes Fleming intercepted a pass on a Corsairs' fake field-goal attempt. Hutchison had kicked a 38-yard field goal in the first quarter.
"You could tell all week how bad these guys wanted it by the way they worked in practice," Hutchison said. "I wanted to do this for all my teammates and it feels good."
Carmel (3-2, 2-1) came back after the Spartans took a 10-0 halftime lead when Jeruel Taylor scored on a 55-yard run. Marian went ahead 17-0 when John Rhode hit Austin Guaccio for a 33-yard score.
This is the first time since 2002 the Spartans have started 5-0 and the first time since 2000 they beat Carmel. The Corsairs had won eight straight in the series.
Bradley-Bourbonnais 40, Thornridge 18
Falcons suffer first loss
The Boilermakers (4-1, 2-0) handed the Falcons (4-1, 2-1) their first loss in the SouthWest Suburban Red game.
Randy Gordon scored five touchdowns for the Boilermakers. Thornridge actually outgained the Boilermakers 363 total offensive yards to 360, but lost two fumbles.
The Falcons trailed 33-0 before Mika'il McCall scored on a 44-yard run. Jacolby Owens scored on a 57-yard pass from Derrick Martin to make it 27-12. Thornridge's final score came on a 40-yard pass from Martin to Gary Ford.
Crete-Monee 19, Kankakee 12
No. 3 Warriors hold off Kays for SAC win
The Times No. 3 Warriors (4-1, 2-0) held off a late comeback attempt by the Class 5A No. 7 Kays (3-2, 1-1) for the Southland Athletic Conference win.
Crete-Monee led 19-0 before Kankakee came back via two Marcus Pope touchdown passes.
"The game didn't end the way we wanted it to, but a win is a win," Warriors coach Jerry Verde said. "We played well for three and a half quarters. I give our kids credit for coming out and taking it to them."
Justin Roudez hit A.J. Pierre for a 42-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Greg Barksdale Jr.'s 7-yard run made it 13-0. Julius Spicer's 46-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter put Crete-Monee ahead 19-0.
Spicer finished with 94 yards rushing, while Roudez was 10-of-17 passing for 99 yards.
Bloom Twp. 19, Rich South 12
Blazing Trojans pick up first win
Calvin McGregory's 40-yard interception return for a touchdown put the icing on the cake as the Blazing Trojans picked up their first win, beating the Stars (1-4, 0-2) in a Southland Athletic Conference game.
Rich South was trailing 13-12 when McGregor intercepted the pass.
Craig Davis blocked a punt and Aarion Ivy returned it 15 yards for a touchdown to put the Blazing Trojans ahead 13-12. Bloom Twp. also scored when Justin Starks hit Jeremy Wright for a 24-yard score.

Chargers run over Thunderbirds
The Chargers (1-4, 1-2) won their first game in handing the Thunderbirds (1-4, 0-3) a SouthWest Suburban Red loss.
It was Thornwood's fourth-straight loss.

Porters pull away from Wildcats
Lockport (4-1, 2-1) rebounded from its loss last week to Lincoln-Way East by beating the Wildcats (2-3, 1-2) in SouthWest Suburban Blue action.

Marian's Ward signs with St. Francis
Marian Catholic senior outfielder Natalie Ward signed with the University of St. Francis on Thursday.
The Crete resident and Times 2009 Co-Player of the Year set the school record for home runs (11) in a single season. She batted .486 and had 53 hits, and the Spartans were 24-7.
