CRETE | General McArthur is not your typical No. 9 hitter.

Then again, he doesn't have a typical name.

The sophomore was batting .333 coming into Tuesday's big Southland Athletic Conference showdown with Rich Central. Believe it or not, it was the lowest average among the starting nine.

McArthur boosted his average and his team into sole possession of first place in the SAC as he was 4-for-4 with five RBIs to lead the Warriors to a 12-9 win over Rich Central.

His two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the sixth gave the Warriors (15-3, 9-0) a couple of insurance runs and helped seal the win.

"I knew when I was on deck that I had to make something happen," McArthur said. "I knew one run was not enough and so I went up there and told myself that I had to help put the game away."

McArthur said he is the fourth generation person in his family to carry the name.

Crete-Monee coach Gene Cahan said the sophomore has been consistent all year.

"General is batting ninth because everyone above him is hitting better,' Cahan said. "It's always good when your No. 9 hitter is like General. You can count on him. We have a pretty good hitting lineup."

Winning pitcher Kyle Bumpass (4-1) went the distance, throwing 120 pitches. The Olympians' Jake McCabe also threw a complete game, throwing 118 pitches. He survived a 12-batter first inning and and 11-batter sixth.

The two play again today in Olympia Fields.

"I got a rubber arm and I felt just fine," Bumpass said. "I knew it would be a game like this because both teams could hit and the wind was blowing out. We won and it was a big win in the conference.

Rich Central scored twice in the first, but the Warriors came back with seven in their half of the first. Crete led 7-4 when the Olympians' Demetrius Todd hit a three-run homer in the fifth to tie the score.

"I didn't get rattled because I knew we would come back," Bumpass said. "I have that confidence in my team in the field and at the plate.

Rich Central (15-3, 8-1) took a 9-8 lead after six as it scored two unearned runs before McArthur's heroics gave the Warriors their 13th straight win.

"We might have been a little nervous coming in," Cahan said. " Rich Central can hit and who have we played? This was big, but it just means we are one up on them. If we win tomorrow (today), then we are two up and that gives us a little more of an edge."
