FLOSSMOOR | It didn't take long before Homewood-Flossmoor coach Chris Reid knew that the teams were going to have to call this one.
The Vikings boys soccer team had their match against Illiana Christian postponed Wednesday evening due to thunderstorms in the area. The storms rolled through at 4:30 p.m., about a half hour before the start of the game. At 5:15, there was still lightning in the area when the teams decided to call the match. No makeup date has been set for the game.
"I don't know much about Illiana, but we were looking forward to a good game," Reid said. "Both coaches wanted to get the game in, but we didn't want the kids to be there until 9:30 at night because they have homework to do."
The Vikings are 3-3-1 on the 2013 season. Reid said he would like to get the game rescheduled, but that will be up to the later availability of both teams.
"We'll try to find and open date and reschedule it," Reid said. "But we'll have to see if we can find an open date."
Homewood-Flossmoor was 0-6 in Southwest Suburban Conference play last season, and the Vikings will begin their SSC schedule next week when they host Lincoln-Way East at 5 Tuesday. Reid is confident the Vikings will turn some heads this season in the SSC.
"Our seniors are really motivated this season and that's what's been the difference for us," Reid said. "I think talent wise, we're the same as last year. Conference starts next week and I think we're going to surprise some people."
Illiana Christian finished 12-15-2 in 2012 and is coming off of a regional title win in 2012. Illiana Christian is under first-year coach Tim Delahaunty. The Vikings are led by standout junior goalie, Chad Ketelaar. Delahaunty could not be reached for comment following the postponement.
