Thornwood's Donte Thomas is always looking to improve his game.
Whether it is his shot, defense or passing, Thomas knows he cannot be satisfied.
The Bradley recruit also has worked on keeping control on the court.
"I know I cannot let things bother me because that hurts my team," Thomas said. "You learn to let things go and not get mad about it."
Thomas said being calm helps him and his team. Thornwood coach Paul Slavich agrees that he has made great strides.
"He has gotten a lot better and that is part of maturing," Slavich said. "Donte knows people try to get to him and he is learning to just ignore it and play basketball."
Thomas said it also sets an example for his teammates.
"I am a senior and expected to be a leader," Thomas said. "That means more than scoring. It means making sure the younger kids are doing the right things and working hard every day in practice.
"A senior has to lead by example."
Slavich said Thomas has also improved his basketball skills and that has helped the Thunderbirds.
"He has worked at his game, a lot over the summer and it shows," Slavich said. "I think he has a ways to go, especially when he gets to the next level.
"I think Donte knows that and he is working on those things. He is not there yet, but Donte is getting the job done. He knows when he needs to take charge and score, but he also knows when there are tow or three guys on him, he needs to pass off."
Thomas said he has worked hard on defense.
"I realize that you have to not just be a scorer," Thomas said. "Defensive slip-ups can cost you a game. We pride ourselves on defense here and you can get a lot of points off of transitions, steals."
