Marian Catholics' Gaby Rosales is in contention for the state singles title at the IHSA state tennis finals in the northwest suburbs.
Roslaes, a Munster resident, beat Mundelein's Ari Dechter 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5 in a fourth-round championship match on Friday. Rosales will play Lyons Township's Alex Chatt today in quarterfinal match.
"I am excited because last year I did not get this far," Rosales said. "I want to keep winning and to do that I am going to have to play my best."
She said while the wet and windy conditions are challenging, she did not let it bother her.
"I guess maybe you don't come out hitting as hard because you don't want to pull something," Rosales said. "I just am trying to play my game and do the best I can."
Homewood-Flossmoor's Adesuwa Osabuohien lost her quarterfinal match to Hinsdale Central's Alex Solovyev, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. She will compete in the a sixth-round consolation match today.
T.F. South's Bryttish Burts won both of her matches in the consolation bracket. She beat Morgan Park Academy's Skylar Taft and Jacobs' Ashley Kosy. She will play Tork's Maria Avgerinos today in a fourth-round consolation match.
H-F's Faith Huckabee was in a late consolation bracket match on Friday.
In doubles consolation play, Marian's Giselle Beebe and Megan Melby beat Fenton's Kim Taylor and Monika Gurdak, then lost their next match and are out of the tourney.
H-F's Sophia Osabuohien and Timara Maxwell beat Rosary's Andrea Goyao and Megan Conlin 6-3, 6-3. They will go against York's Angela Avgerinos & Blaire Porter this morning.
