The Times breakdown: The Vikings ended their 2012 season with a 37-35 loss to O'Fallon in the first round of the 8A playoffs. Homewood-Flossmoor has reached the playoffs in each of Buzea's first three seasons, and a trip to the postseason will be a goal in 2013 as well. The Vikings lost plenty of senior fire power to graduation, and will need this season's seniors to fill the skill positions. Aaron Gooch had two touchdowns as a receiver in 2012 and will be called on to play a bigger part of the offense in 2013. Likewise, senior running back Vashon Nutt will be slated for more touches this year after the departures of last season's primary runners, running back Taje Smith and quarterback Ronald Johnson. Senior quarterback Isaac Cutrara will be running the offense after only attempting four passes in 2012 and will be called on to help lead the Vikings.
Quote: "We are a very inexperienced team with a lot of upperclassmen being challenged by a lot of sophomores which will make for some good competition during practice. We are going to count on a lot of guys on offense to handle the ball that haven't done it at the varsity level yet which is our biggest concern. Defensively, we will have to swarm to the ball and be opportunistic with takeaways if we are to be successful this fall. Overall, even though the experience is lacking in this group, we still have high expectations every year at H-F and this year is no different in that regard. We hope to be a quality opponent on the field this season." — Buzea
