Scouting the area's top games

(Records in parentheses)

Bremen (2-1, 1-0 SSC Blue) at T.F. North (2-1, 1-0)

When: 6:45 p.m. today

The breakdown: The Meteors can retain first place in the South Suburban Blue, but it will not be easy. They haven't been over .500 since 2011, and it depends which team shows up. Quarterback Aaron Dunigan has proven himself to be a leader. Center Jamal Williams will move to guard because he has a broken left finger on his snapping hand. Bremen has some firepower. Tyler Banovich had four touchdowns and Darius Tolbert rushed for 169 yards in last week's win. -- Mike Nieto

T.F. South (1-2, 0-1 SSC Blue) at Hillcrest (0-3, 0-1)

When: 6:45 p.m. today

The breakdown: This is the third of four straight road games for T.F. South. The Rebels cannot afford another South Suburban Blue loss if they are to contend for the conference title. The defense will have to shut down Darron Gilton and Josh Cazley, who rushed for 124 and 132 yards, respectively, in a loss to T.F. North. -- Mike Nieto

Benet Academy (3-0) at No. 2 Crete-Monee (3-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

The breakdown: It’s a battle of unbeatens as the Warriors, 27-1 since 2011, put their 17-game winning streak on the line against an offensive powerhouse from the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Crete-Monee will need to be close to perfect against Benet, and will need to control triple-threat Ryan Parks, who ran back a kickoff for a touchdown, picked off a pass, and caught a pair of passes in Benet’s 37-13 dismantling of St. Patrick. – Tim Cronin

Bradley Bourbonnais (3-0, 1-0 SWSC Red) at Thornton (2-1, 1-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

The breakdown: The Wildcats will have to stop rusher Jarrod Ware and cover tailback L.J. Harris tightly or they’ll be giving up 30 points again. Thornton got on track against Thornwood and needs to stay that way. – Tim Cronin

Bloom Township (2-1) at Elmwood Park 1-2)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

The breakdown: The Tigers will be bolstered by the return of Trent Wood at running back. Bloom seeks consistency rather than dependance on last-minute heroics. Justus Brantley rushed for the game-winning touchdown with 38 seconds to play last week. -- Tim Cronin

Brother Rice (1-2, 0-0 CCL Blue) vs. No. 1 Mount Carmel (3-0, 0-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

Where: Gately Stadium

TV: UToo (Ch. 26.2)

The breakdown: Mount Carmel has outscored its opponents 131-8, including two shutouts. A win tonight would be the program's 698th and only East St. Louis has more all-time wins (886). Mount Carmel leads the series 35-20 and has won nine in a row. Brother Rice last won in 2004. The Crusaders lost 28-20 to Fenwick last week and have lost two in a row. Marcus Jones is a threat out of the backfield. -- Mike Nieto

Marian Catholic (2-1, 0-1 ESCC) at Notre Dame (3-0, 0-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

The breakdown: Marian has to recover from its 41-7 loss to Carmel Catholic and the Dons will be a handful. Chris James is one of the top running backs in the state and will give Marian's defense fits. The Spartans will have to limit mistakes in their first road contest of the season. Notre Dame won 22-9 last year, but Marian holds a 10-8 series advantage. According to Marian's website, the winner has scored more than 23 points just twice and 12 of the 18 games have been decided by eight points or less.-- Mike Nieto

No. 3 Homewood-Flossmoor (3-0, 1-0 SWSC Blue) at Joliet Central (0-3, 0-1)

When: 1 p.m. Saturday

The breakdown: H-F has outscored its opponents 103-48, while the Steelmen have been outscored 146-7 — and have been shut out twice. -- Mike Nieto
