Scouting the area's top games

(Records in parentheses)

No. 3 Crete-Monee (4-1, 1-0 SAC) at Kankakee (3-2, 1-1)

When: 7 p.m. today

The breakdown: The Warriors rolled over Rich East 53-12 and got great play from their special teams as Deon Benton and Elijah Douglas each returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Crete has won 27 straight conference games dating back to the 2007 season, and has never lost a SAC game in the four years of the conference's existence. Defensively, Jonathan Draper had 27 solos, 16 assists, four TFLs and two interceptions, while Nyles Mrgan has 23 solos and 12 assists. A win would make the Warriors playoff eligible. Kankakee rolled over Rich South 46-7 as Dyrrah Christon ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns. The Kays have won two in a row and are over .500 for the first time since 2009. Crete has won the last seven meetings. The Kays' last win in the series was 44-22 in 2004.-- Mike Nieto

Eisenhower (4-1) at T.F. South (2-3)

When: 7 p.m. today

The breakdown: This is a big one for the Rebels if they are to keep their playoff chances alive. They are home the rest of the way and need to use the home field to their advantage. Tonight is homecoming, but they cannot let distractions get in the way. JaVaughn Hunter and Trenton Gilbert lead the ground attack with 196 and 141 yards, respectively. Cody Petrich is 38-of-100 passing for 595 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. Efie Ovie has 15 catches for 275 yard and three TDs. Defensively, linebacker Jariel Brooks leads the defense with 42 solos and 27 assists, Raphael Canty has 23 and 10, respectively. Eisenhower quarterback Dion Parker threw for one score and rushed for another in a win over Oak Lawn. -- Mike Nieto

No. 2 Homewood-Flossmoor (5-0, 3-0 SWSC Blue) at Sandburg (4-1, 3-0)

When: 7 p.m. today

The breakdown: Sandburg stormed into SouthWest Suburban Blue contention with pass defense and big rushing performances by Brian Langowski. The Eagles will need both at peak efficiency against the high-octane Vikings. H-F surprised Lincoln-Way East with the single wing last week, but may return to modern times and the T-formation, all the better to take advantage of quarterback Isaac Cutrara’s arm. He threw for 105 yards from Pop Warner’s setup. With Bolingbrook coming next week, it’s the first of two big games for H-F, which needs one win for a playoff berth. -- Tim Cronin

Marian Catholic (2-3) at Champaign Central (1-4)

When: 7 p.m. today

Where: Champaign Centennial H.S.

The breakdown: If Marian is to keep its playoff hopes alive, this is a must win. The Maroons have struggled with their lone win coming over a 1-4 Urbana team, 21-20. Both teams are on a three-game losing streak. Spartans quarterback Patrick Schmidt has been impressive as has Ki-Jana Crawford. Marian was trounced 40-7 by Benet and has been outscored 116-14 in its last three games. -- Mike Nieto

T.F. North (2-3, 1-2 SSC Blue) at Tinley Park (1-4, 0-2)

When: 7 p.m. today

The breakdown: The Meteors have dropped two in a row and both teams are struggling to keep their faint playoff chances alive. North cannot continue to dig itself a hole and will be tested by the Titans' Preston Thompson, the school's all-time leading rusher. Tinley Park played Lemont tough last week, falling 24-17. The Meteors' Davion Sylvester threw for three touchdowns last week, but they just couldn't stop undefeated Argo when it needed to. -- Mike Nieto

Thornton (3-2, 2-1 SWSC Red) at Andrew (2-3, 1-3)

When: 7:15 p.m. today

The breakdown: It’s a must-win game for Thornton if it wants to contend for the SouthWest Suburban Red title. The Wildcats were shut down last week by Lincoln-Way North, but face an Andrew defense that has allowed more than 40 points in three of the last four games. If quarterback Jo Wahn Brown, knocked out of last week’s game, isn’t ready, Michael Fuller should be an able substitute, but Thornton will need more rushing offense than the 64 yards it was limited to last week. -- Tim Cronin

Bloom Township (3-2, 1-1 SAC) at Rich South (1-4, 0-1)

When: Noon Saturday

The breakdown: Bloom Township needs to bounce back after its loss to Rich Central. If it can take care of the ball and Justus Brantley and Kendall McGinnis do their thing, the Blazing Trojans will be fine against a team that gave up 46 points to Kankakee last week. Bloom linebacker Lawrence Evans is becoming a force, returning an interception for a score last week. A big one for Bloom as it has Crete-Monee in Week 7, but it can not look ahead. -- Mike Nieto

No. 1 Mount Carmel (5-0, 2-0 CCL Blue) at Loyola (5-0, 2-0)

When: 1:30 p.m. Saturday

TV: UToo (Channel 26.2)

The breakdown: It’s a battle of unbeaten No. 1s, with the Caravan top-ranked by The Times locally and the AP statewide in Class 7A, and Loyola the AP’s No. 1 team in 8A. The lofty positions are well-earned. Loyola was the only team to beat Mount Carmel last season, and while that didn’t stop the Caravan from rolling to the Class 8A title, it’s still an outcome they want to reverse. To do so, the Caravan will have to limit Ramblers quarterback Jack Penn’s effectiveness. The lacrosse whiz has riddled defenses this year, while Loyola’s defense has stifled passing teams. Look for halfback Matt Domer to get the ball for Mount Carmel early and often. The winner locks up a playoff berth. -- Tim Cronin

Washington (4-1, 2-1 Windy City) vs. Urban Prep Charter/Bronzeville (4-1, 3-0)

When: 4 p.m. Saturday

Where: Eckersall Stadium

The breakdown: The Patriots have put up some good numbers, including quarterback Aaron Cruz, who has completed 86 of 117 passes (73.5 percent) for 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. A win would move Washington one step closer to the playoffs. There is a logjam at the top of the Windy City and the top two teams make the postseason. Alvaro Villarreal leads the defense with 14 solos and 19 assists. James Chance and Oscar Moreno have three sacks each. -- Mike Nieto
