Crete-Monee at T.F. South

When: 7 p.m. today

The breakdown: Crete-Monee has a lot back, but also has some big shoes to fill from its 14-0, Class 6A state championship team. T.F. South was 7-3 also a playoff team, losing to Thornton in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs. First-year John Konecki has the size and a tough defense. Offensively, the Warriors may run the ball more with DeShaun Smith. He will have a big line to run behind, led by Josh McCaskel. T.F. South has some size up front as Tom Padjen begins his 37th year in Lansing. Crete won 38-7 last year. Defensively, Crete is tough, led by Division I prospects Nyles Morgan, Chris Slayton, Omari Stringer and Jonathan Draper and Deon Benton. Franklin Douglas will start at quarterback for Crete, while Cody Petrich gets the call for the Rebels. Defensively, linebackers Raphael Canty and Jariel Brooks lead the way. -- Mike Nieto

Morgan Park at Thornton

When: 7 p.m. today

The breakdown: Thornton’s vaunted passing attack – JoWahn Brown to Jauan Wesley and D’Andre Fuller – goes against a Morgan Park defense that allowed 80 points in its last two games last season, even as the Mustangs compiled a 7-5 record. Wildcats coach Bill Mosel calls his defensive line inexperienced, but he also knows how to get off to a fast start. Thornton has won its last three openers, and four of the last five. Morgan Park, 44 strong, has a new logo, but that’s not a good match for Thornton’s firepower. -- Tim Cronin

 T.F. North at Bradley-Bourbonnais

When: 7 p.m. today

The breakdown: The Meteors take a seven-game losing streak into the game. North has some potential and a season-opening road win could build some confidence. The Boilermakers were 6-4 last season. AJ Long and Jamal Williams lead a big offensive line, which should open some holes for Adonis Barnes, Ke'Von Martin and Nikita Smith Jr. Williams, Smith and Price lead a defensive unit that is out to prove it can stop people. -- Mike Nieto

Hyde Park at Marian Catholic

When: 7:30 p.m. today

The breakdown: The Jerry Verde era begins as the 1995 Marian grad returns after building Crete-Monee into a power and winning the 2012 Class 6A state title. Marian was 1-8 last year, while Hyde Park was 6-3.  Ki-Jana Crawford is a powerful threat as a runner, receiver and kick returner. With new uniforms, a new logo and new coach, the Spartans are pumped, but the Thunderbirds will give them a game. -- Mike Nieto

Simeon at Homewood-Flossmoor

When: 7:30 p.m. today

The breakdown: With only five starters returning, the Vikings' offense may stick more to the ground in the opener, until senior QB Isaac Cutrara (only four passes last year) gets his legs. That would mean RB Vashon Nutt would be asked to carry the load after only 14 carries in 2012. Cutrara will be looking for senior WR Aaron Gooch when he passes. -- Tim Cronin

St. Patrick vs. Mount Carmel

When: 10 a.m. Saturday

Where: Soldier Field

The breakdown: The Caravan won its 11th state title last season. The Caravan won last year 32-12 at Soldier Field. There are a lot of new faces on the team, including senior quarterback Marko Boricich. The defense is pretty solid with linebackers Sam Connolly, Nick Johnson, Troy Weissenhofer are defensive backs Christian Searles and Deontae Brown in the fold. Illinois recruit Matt Domer will be trouble for the Shamrocks defense. -- Mike Nieto

Thornwood at Bloom Township

When: Noon Saturday

Where: Bloom Trail H.S.

The breakdown: The Blazing Trojans are looking to get off to a fast start after making the playoffs last year for the first time since 1989. Running back Justus Brantley leads the way as does quarterback Kendall McGinnis. Thornwood, under first-year coach Billy Bundy, would like to pull off the upset and get its season started on the right foot. Bloom coach Tony Palombi expects a tough game as does Bundy. Both teams have playmakers and a big play could decide this one. -- Mike Nieto
