CHICAGO | It looked like Times No. 5 and Class 2A No. 3 Seton Academy boys basketball team would cruise after a fast start.

A speed bump in the second quarter slowed the Sting (17-9), but they turned it on in the second half for a 51-41 nonconference win at Marist on Tuesday night.

Seton outscored the RedHawks 12-0 in the first quarter, but struggled in the second quarter, taking a 25-20 halftime lead.

"We were energetic in the first quarter and it showed," guard Mark Weems Jr. said. "We kind pf lost that energy in the second quarter and turned the ball over.

"We picked it up again in the third quarter and we kept going."

Weems finished with a game-high 25 points, while Alex Foster had a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. For Weems and fellow senior Kamal Shasi, it was their 66th varsity win in a Sting uniform, which ties Kenny Stevenson Jr. for the most wins by a player.

"It's a great honor to be in the same category as Kenny Stevenson because he was a great player here," Shasi said. "We want to win a few more though."

The Sting play at St. Rita on Friday with the Catholic League South title on the line. Both teams have one conference loss. They Seton hosts its own Class 2A regional.

Foster said Marist (16-8) switched up defenses in the second quarter and got back in the game.

"They did a better job protecting the post and we are an inside team," Foster said. "We got it fixed and we controlled the boards. They are more of an outside-shooting team and we're more inside."

Seton opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run and took control.

"We got re-energized at halftime," Weems said. "Coach told us to play our game, be patient and play good defense. We did and we started to get control back."
