CALUMET CITY | T.F. North just had to wait a few more days to pick up its first win.
After the Meteors were forced the forfeit last week's South Suburban Conference win against Evergreen Park, T.F. North overcame SSC Red opponent Eisenhower 53-33 to pick up its first conference win and first team win of the season.
Against Evergreen Park, the Meteors violated a conference rule by playing a sophomore in both the sophomore and varsity games. The rule states that a player cannot compete on both levels on the same day.
"We're trying to get that chemistry together because they haven't really played together," Meteors coach Chris Pruitt. "They're young. I only have two seniors. They're growing and they see the big picture on that as far as us getting control of a game."
T.F. North's Chanel Howard score 22 points and picked up five steals in Tuesday night's win. Taisha Johnson added 10 points and four rebounds for the Meteors (1-6, 1-1 SSC Blue).
"We just tried to play hard defense," Johnson said. "Man them, pressure them, call ball, so they would turn the ball over. They didn't do well under pressure which is why we kept pressuring them and getting up in their face."
The Meteors made a conscious effort to get the transition game going and push the pace against the Cardinals. T.F. North used the uptempo transition game to open up a 26-10 halftime lead.
"We were just pushing the ball up and making sure we get it up," Howard said. "Making sure we make the game fast paced. Keep it going, so we can run them."
T.F. North dominated the boards against Eisenhower and limited the Cardinal's second-chance scoring opportunities. Bianca Ruiz led the Meteors with 14 rebounds. The senior forward also added six points and three assists.
"We're just improving every game," Howard said. "Every game is just taking another step forward. We just need to get better every game. Keep the team and do better."
