Keaera Cunningham had seven kills, 10 digs, two assists and three blocks, while Stephanie Galan and Erika Galan had three aces each to lead the St. Francis de Sales girls volleyball team to a 25-10, 25-5 win over Seton Academy in the Class 1A Seton Academy Regional championship on Thursday.
Stpehanie Galan also had six kills and 10 assists. Erika Galan added seven assists. Mayra Munoz had four aces and two kills.
It was the first regional for 10th-year Pioneers coach Arlene Ramos, who is stepping down after the season to become an assistant athletic director, and the program's first regional title since coach Kelly Cavanaugh led them to a Class A regional title in 1993. Ramos said her team kept its focus.
"It is what we were working towards all year," Ramos said. "Our kids came out strong and finished strong."
She said Stephanie Galan had another strong match serving.
"She got 10 (points) in a row and was on with all of her serves," Ramos said. "She continued in the second game and that gave us a strong advantage."
The Pioneers (14-5) face North Shore Country Day at 6 p.m. Tuesday in one semifinal of the Harvest Christian Sectional.
Class 1A Grant Park Regional: The host Dragons beat Illinois Lutheran 25-23 and 25-14 for the title.
Catholic League Blue honors: Mount Carmel senior running back and Illinois recruit Matt Domer was named the Chicago Catholic League Blue's Lawless Award winner and coach Frank Lenti was named the co-winner for coaches.
Lenti and St. Rita coach Todd Kuska shared the honor as their teams finished in a three-way tie with Loyola Academy for the CCL Blue title.
Caravan defensive lineman and Minnesota recruit Steven Richardson was named the league's outstanding defensive player. St. Rita's Tommy Mister was named the outstanding offensive player.
Also making the team from Mount Carmel were Jimmy Mickens, Christian Searles, Sam Connolly, Deonate Brown, Nick Johnson and Michigan State recruit Enoch Smith.
