Emmanuel Barjebo, Sr., F
Stats: 23 goals, 20 assists
Barjebo helped lift the Wildcats to new heights in 2013, and his speed and scoring ability made it tough on opposing defenses all season long. Thornton Township enjoyed great success as a team this season, advancing to the 3A Andrew Sectional championship where it fell 2-1 to Sandburg in overtime. The Wildcats posted a record of 19-3 in 2013, and Barjebo's 20 assists on the year prove he is able to facilitate for his teammates as well as score on his own.
Arturo Aupont, Sr., F
Stats: 13 goals
Aupont missed a month in the middle of Washington's season, but when the senior came back from injury, he was the catalyst for the Patriots' eventual 2A state championship team. Aupont moved from his goalkeeper position in 2012 to give help to the Patriots wherever they needed, and the need was at the offensive end. Aupont's header goal against St. Ignatius in overtime at the state championship match helped to lift Washington to a state title.
Ray Kobus, Sr., MF
Stats: 17 goals, 10 assists
Kobus' comeback from an ACL tear in 2012 was all the more impressive because of what the senior midfielder was able to accomplish in 2013. Kobus helped lead the United to a 16-7-1 record this season, and an appearance in the Windy City Ram Classic Championship match at Toyota Park. The four-year starter has seen all the ups and downs of the United, and he has been the steadying force that Thornton Fractional has looked to for the past four season.
Alec Guarino, Jr., F
Stats: 24 goals, 5 assists
Guarino was named MVP of the Windy City Ram Classic after the Spartans won the tournament on September 7 at Toyota Park. Guarino may have had even higher numbers had the junior forward not missed a few games battling injury. Guarino is a threat to score any time he touches the ball, and the power of his shots just may be the most underrated aspect of his game. Look for Guarino to be one of the areas leading goal scorers in 2014.
Evan Henschel, Sr., F
Stats: 24 goals, 2 assists
Henschel scored goals in all but four of the Chargers' matches this season, and his shot efficiency at the offensive end of the field resulted in over 50 percent of his overall shots resulting in goals. Henschel was the go-to goal scorer when the Chargers needed goals and was also named all-conference in the River Valley Conference and an all-sectional selection.
Nikola Bosnjak, Sr., MF
Stats: 12 goals, 8 assists
Bosnjak was the Lawless Award Winner in the Chicago Catholic league and helped lift the Caravan to a co-championship in the CCL. The senior captain was also an all-state selection. The Caravan's 10-6-5 regular season record in 2013 was a major improvement on a 8-14-3 campaign in 2012, and Bosnjak was the engine the drove the Caravan success and a major piece of the Mount Carmel turnaround.
Jackson Strick, Jr., MF
Stats: 10 goals, 12 assists
Strick is a defensive midfielder, but at either end of the pitch, the Beecher team runs through Strick. He was named the MVP of the River Valley Conference, and his ability to defend opponents' offensive midfielders is as good as any player in the area. Strick was an all-sectional selection in 2013 and gives the Bearcats plenty to be optimistic about in 2014.
Matt Kimmel, Sr., F/MF
Stats: 17 goals, 11 assists
Kimmel is only one of three seniors on the 2013 Vikings team, and along with all-area honorable mentions, Cody Koehler and Trevor Devries, Kimmel provided the leadership and scoring that the Vikings needed. The Vikings finished 9-9-3 in 2013 but had quality wins against Glenbard South, Timothy Christian, and Elmwood Park. The three seniors will be missed, but the Vikings should be a strong contender for a regional title in 2014.
Juan Elizalde, Sr., F
Stats: 28 goals, 9 assists
Elizalde and the Blazing Trojans finished 10-0 in the Southland Athletic Conference for the second year in a row, and Elizalde was the offensive threat Bloom was looking for in 2013. The senior forward was an all-sectional nominee and his 28 goals led Bloom in scoring. The Blazing Trojans will again look for someone to fill the scoring role in the coming seasons.
Ricardo Estrada, So., MF
Stats: 13 goals, 16 assists
Estrada may be only a sophomore, but he is as talented and as complete a player as there is in the area. His size and skill already set him apart from most varsity players, and the sky is the limit on just how good Estrada can become in the next two seasons. His overtime goal against Marist on October 29th lifted the Wildcats to the sectional championship match. Estrada is a potential Division I player in the making and a potential player of the year in 2014.
Fernando Aguirre, Jr., MF
Stats: 21 goals, 10 assists
Aguirre led the Warriors in goals scored in 2013 and was an all-conference selection in the Southland Athletic Conference for the third year in a row. He was named the Warriors' team MVP for the second straight season. Aguirre's ability to play at both ends of the field is one of the reasons the Warriors never gave up more than two goals in any win or loss this year.
Alejandro Llamas, Sr., D
Llamas was the anchor on Washington's 2A state championship defense. The Patriots finished 15-1-8 in 2013 and recorded the first Chicago Public League state championship team since Lane won a title in 2011. Llamas is also a model student in the classroom, sporting a 3.3 GPA. The senior captain goes out on top as a state champion and will be tough to replace in the back of the Patriot defense.
Chris Taborn, Sr., GK
Stats: 12 shutouts, 1.04 goals against average
Taborn has been a wall in goal for the Spartans for the past four seasons and finding his replacement will not be an easy task. The senior captain was named the top keeper in the Windy City Ram Classic and helped lift Marian Catholic to the tournament title with two big overtime saves for the Spartans and another big save in the subsequent shootout. Taborn also kicked for the Spartan football team this fall and proved his versatility and athleticism by providing a big leg on the Marian Catholic gridiron.
